Judy Beckman, Director

At her first regional competition directing Harmony of the Gorge in 2010, Judy received Region 24's Novice Director Award with Harmony of the Gorge.  In 2012 she achieved her Director Certification.  She continues her studies at annual Director Seminars.

The rest of the story....

Judy has been a Sweet Adeline most of her life, beginning at the age of twelve when her music teacher asked her and some friends if they'd like to try quartetting.  That was all it took.  She was hooked!  The quartet, the Tonka Tones, sang together for six years and before they each went their own way for college, they sang at the music teacher's wedding and made a recording in a studio on reel-to-reel equipment.  Later she sang with Lakeside Harmony Chorus and the Gal-A-Bouts Quartet in Ortonville, Minnesota.  She also sang with the Twin City Chorus in Minneapolis..  Even back then, Judy was the script writer for her quartet and her chorus.

After relocating to the Pacific Northwest, in 2005, she joined Harmony of the Gorge chorus, known at that time as Hood River Valley Sweet Adelines Chorus.  Within weeks, she was not only contributing with her magnificent bass voice, but also with emcee spots for performances.  She soon added “note taking” during rehearsals and coaching sessions and emailed them to the chorus members.

Judy has become not only the voice, but the face of Sweet Adelines in the Gorge.  She’s regularly on morning radio talk shows in the area and she represents the chorus at the various Chambers of Commerce meetings in our various communities.  She has arranged for quartets to attend morning meetings to demonstrate our craft, promote Sweet Adelines, and encourage visitors to our chorus performances and rehearsals.   She seldom misses opportunities to share her love of barbershop harmony and the chorus wherever she goes, whether it be the bank, coffee shop, or grocery store.

Judy has always insured that the chorus has a presence in community events.  She made sure that the chorus was included in the local Fourth of July Parade, Huckleberry Festival Parade, and we’ve sung for two years at a Christmas party honoring local volunteers.

When the chorus has a booth selling our beautiful handmade necklaces, she is there, setting up and staffing the booth.  She approaches businesses, encouraging them to sell our necklaces.  She has even been known to sell the necklace she is wearing to an admirer.

Judy's preference has always been standing with us on the risers, but when the need arose, she stepped forward to become our director.  She then worked quickly to obtain her Sweet Adelines’ Director Certification.  She attends major SAI Director trainings and views the webinars looking for ways to become a better director.  She is continually reading materials to help us grow as individuals, singers, and as a chorus unit.

Judy is a very talented script writer.  She wrote the scripts for, “Radio Daze”, (2012 fall show), and for "A Little Off, Off Broadway"(2013).  The chorus produces its own show annually and has taken the show on the road to Goldendale.  (They're open to taking it to other towns, as well!!!)

Judy also sings with the Pride of Portland chorus.  She has competed with Pride of Portland at Internationals in Las Vegas in 2006; Hawaii in 2008, placing 9th; Seattle in 2010, placing 9th and earning Audience Choice Award; in Denver in 2012, placing 8th and in Baltimore, placing 4th!

She has attended Sweet Adeline Directors Trainings, and numerous International competitions over her years as a Sweet Adeline.  She attends Region 13’s SET (Summer Enrichment Training) yearly, and since 2008, Judy has been both staff and/or faculty at Harmony College Northwest in Tacoma, WA.
